Former Newton Aycliffe winger Josh Gray has today signed for fellow Northern League first division side Ashington.
The former Darlington wide man – who had an unsuccessful trial back with the Quakers this summer – put pen to paper at Woodhorn Lane after Newtonians boss Allan Oliver decided against retaining the 21-year-old.
Gray arrived at Moore Lane Park last August and immediately endeared himself to fans of the club, with a blistering debut against Stokesley, in which he netted.
A back complaint ruled Gray out of action for two months shortly after and when he returned to the side, Gray operated as a make-shift left-back and wing back.
In all, Gray made 30 appearances for the club, and scored three goals, including one in the FA Cup reverse to Billingham Synthonia.
Fellow midfielder Chase McMullen has also decided not to agree terms with the club for the upcoming season, and becomes a free agent.
McMullen has been a mainstay of the side since it’s rise from the parks of the Durham Alliance league, and made 87 Northern League appearances, scoring five times.
