Newton Aycliffe hit five for the first time in their Northern League history, but they were pushed all the way by a resolute Darlington RA side in this frosty local derby.
Making his first start for the club Mark Bell repaid boss Allan Oliver’s faith by stroking home the first goal after just two minutes and despite Chris Smith – on loan from Spennymoor, equalising after 10 minutes, the visitors seized control with two further goals.
The impressive Danny Robinson got his first of the afternoon with a blockbusting shot from 25-yards that found Jason Hamilton’s top right hand corner and top scorer Elliot Gardner got his tenth league goal of the campaign when Bell squared for him to tap home from six-yards.
Shortly after half time Robinson hooked his second into the top left hand corner of Hamilton’s goal following more impressive work by Bell and at 4-1 Aycliffe were cruising.
Substitute Kevin Duggan – the only man in the 16-strong squad that remained from RA’s visit to Moore Lane Park in August pulled a goal back when a defensive mix-up presented him with an open goal and former Aycliffe man Phil Caley set up a tense finish when he scored with 15 minutes to go.
For the second time in a week though Chase McMullen was well positioned after coming off the bench and with 11 minutes left he put space between the sides when he got the final touch to the returning Dan Mellanby’s cross.
It’s now six unbeaten for Oliver’s men in league action, a run which has seen the Newtonians rise to seventh in the table.
