Aycliffe slipped further down the skilltraining Northern League second division with arguably their worst performance of the season, losing 1-0 at home to Thornaby.
In front of more than 200 again at Moore Lane Park, Allan Oliver’s side never recovered from their now customary early goal conceded.
Thornaby took the lead within the opening 15 minutes when Carl Winspear was given too much space inside the area to smash in Matt Crossan’s low free-kick.
Josh Knox had Aycliffe’s only attack of notable threat in the remainder of the first period when he skipped two challenges but saw his cross-shot evade both the goal and the onrunning Chase McMullen.
Aycliffe came out brighter and McMullen did well to hit the by-line, but his driven centre missed everyone inside the box and ran to safety.
Despite the introduction of the returning Dan Mellanby inside the final half-hour, Aycliffe were unable to claw the game back and they slumped to their third defeat of the campaign.
