Match report

By Paul McGeary
Aycliffe’s eight-game unbeaten league run came to a demoralising end at the hands of fellow promotion outsiders Guisborough Town.
On a heavy pitch in horrific conditions, the Priorymen stole victory from the jaws of defeat as the visitors were left to rue several missed opportunities in the game’s opening half-hour.
New signing Ben Escritt replaced Steven Gill between the posts for the hosts and he immediately endeared himself to the home fans by keeping both Elliot Gardner and Dan Mellanby at bay – the former missing a hat-trick of chances to add to his 13-goal tally.
With 25 minutes remaining Aycliffe carved the Priorymen apart down the right. A long ball from Dion Raitt was expertly controlled by Mellanby. The former Darlington front-man turned his marker with ease and broke into the box before finding Stuey Owen stealing in at the back stick to stab Aycliffe into a deserved lead.
The goal brought the inevitable pressure from the home team and with 12 minutes remaining their pressure told. Former Sunderland RCA man Harrison Davies swung a right wing corner in on goal and amid confusion on the front post, goalkeeper Ste Richardson could only help the ball into the net, despite Raitt’s efforts to turn the ball back into play.
Things went from bad to worse for the side in blue as with just four minutes remaining top scorer David Onions controlled a driven pass and fired home from six yards. Ironic seeing as the usually explosive ‘Dangerous One’ had been kept quiet all game by John Close.
