Newton Aycliffe FC v Team Northumbria

Aycliffe’s hopes of finishing the season any higher than eighth were damaged when they were held to a goalless draw at home to Team Northumbria.
In a typical “end of season” game, neither side created much in the way of clear-cut chances in what was a frustrating performance by the home side.
The draw came just three days after their heroic 1-0 win at home to Sunderland RCA – arguably one of the best defensive displays of the season – which might have contributed towards a “hangover” against the Northumbria University outfit.
But boss Allan Oliver will still have been pleased to see his side keep a clean sheet and maintain their excellent recent form, which is currently the third best in the Northern League second division.
Aycliffe have won four and drawn two of their last six league games, with their last defeat at home to Jarrow Roofing six weeks ago.
It’s form which has seen them almost certainly cement their place in the top eight, unless Whickham win all three of their remaining fixtures.
