Match report

A large crowd was in attendence at Moore Lane for this showcasr friendly against Division One Spennymoor Town ,who were expected to field many of their close season signings and be a stiff test for the relatively young Aycliffe team.
On a superb playing surface the spectators were rewarded with a superb game of football from both teams which was a great advert for Northern League ,with some slick passing, great skill and six goals : what more can you ask for £2.00!!.
T he Moors started strongly with midfield duo Graydon ,who was outstanding all night, and Gott pulling the strings with good pass and movement to the fron men. However,it was Aycliffe who took the lead ,shortly after being denied a penalty for a clear tug by Chris Mason, when Elliott Gardner scored from close range after good play by Paul Broome on the right.Spennymoor soon equalised through Graydon and were dominating play ,particularly in midfield for the majority of the half but could only score once more through Peacock ,ex Boro and Darlo, having been denied by resolute defending with Mark Wood prominent.
Aycliffe introduced Danny Mellanby at half time and he was proving a constant problem to the Moors defence with his skill, strength and experience.Aycliffe were dominating the game and the equaliser came when good inter play between Mellanby and Raitt forced a defender into conceding a penalty which Wood converted .Within minutes Aycliffe were ahead with a vintage Mellanby goal, turning a defender and firing past the keeper's right.Class goal. With more composure Aycliffe should have scored again but gradually Spennymoor were showing their class and experience to get back into the game, with Graydon and second half sub Gavin Cogdon proving a constant danger to the Aycliffe rearguard ,forcing Steve Richardson into two good saves.
The equaliser finally came when tricky right winger Ruddy jinked his way into the penalty area and was clipped by a defender and from the spot kick Graydon coolly beat Richardson
.Summary -on a night when we met strong opposition this relatively young Aycliffe side were equal to the task and a draw was a fair result .If this kind of performance can be reproduced on a weekly basis then Spectators are in for some excellent games.
