Match report

By Paul McGeary
Newton Aycliffe returned to winning ways with a professional performance to see off struggling Horden at Welfare Park.
Whilst rookie Mark Peck was excellent at one end, goals from Anth Campbell, Paul Broom and Warren Byrne at the other ensured Aycliffe's first three points since their visit to Morpeth, almost a month ago.
Aycliffe remained unchanged from their point with Hebburn, Byrne a returning substitute as Craig Mickle kept hold of the number nine shirt having impressed on his debut outing just seven days previous.
Despite cantering through the first period, Aycliffe almost fell behind after 17 minutes when Kevin Boddy sent a looping header over Scott Pocklington from Adam Croft's left-wing corner. Broom was handily placed to clear at the back post however.
Five minutes later, and following Peck's floated ball into the box, Brian Fairhurst headed wide when well placed six-yards from goal, as Aycliffe upped their game.
From Dan Mitton's 50-yard crossfield ball three minutes later, Campbell opened the visitors account, with his first goal of the campaign. Receiving the ball wide left, Campbell set for inside and from the edge of the area, hit an unstoppable right-foot effort past the despairing Grant Herbert in the home goal.
Allan Oliver's men doubled their lead as half-time loomed. Elliot Gardner sent Mickle free in the inside left channel. Mickle twisted and turned Paul Greenwell, before squaring unselfishly for Broom to slot home at the back post, despite pressure from Peter Deary.
With the slope against them in the second half, Aycliffe weren't about to sieze any advantage, and Fred Woodhouse's strong run from half-way almost brought a third. The former Stockton Town winger struck a right-footed effort from 20-yards, which Herbert did well to parry, with Mickle offside as he cleaned up the scraps.
With 19 minutes remaining, tension was brought to the Newtonian ranks as they allowed the Colliers back into the game. Jack Honour - nephew of boss, and former Hartlepool midfielder Brian - was only on the field for five minutes before he struck, amid some poor defending in the Aycliffe box.
Bakary Bojang almost levelled on 78 minutes, but having been fed by the impressing Honour, the Danish national could only fire across the face of Pocklington's goal.
The boys in blue sealed the points with just eight minutes remaining on the clock. Campbell sent Woodhouse free down the left-wing and as the 19-year-old cut inside and shot, Herbert could only parry the ball to top-scorer Byrne, he coolly finished for his ninth, and easiest goal of the season.
With news that leaders Guisborough had been thumped at Chester-le-Street, the Aycliffe contingent started the celebrations early, as their side narrowed the gap on the Priorymen at the summit of the table to a single point.
Aycliffe face two hard games this week, with a visit to fifth-placed Marske on Tuesday followed by a home game with fourth-place Whitehaven at the weekend.
Star Man - Mark PECK
Anth Campbell enjoyed arguably his best game of the season, capped with a goal, but Peck didn't put a foot wrong. The 20-year-old makes the art of defending look simple, and he never missed a header or tackle all afternoon.
