Match report

By Paul McGeary
Newton Aycliffe crashed to their biggest league defeat of the season as their 29-game unbeaten run ended at the hands of Team Northumbria at Coach Lane.
The university side were the better side from start to finish as Allan Oliver’s side signed off from the second division with a forgettable performance.
Goals from Mark Fenwick, Jack Palmer, a Gavin Donoghue penalty and a gift for Lee Scott gave Paul Johnson’s side an emphatic victory.
Paul Broom fired over in the visitors best opportunity of the opening period before a quick free kick at the other end saw Palmer screw wide when well positioned after Scott’s square ball.
The opening goal came in the 37th minute as Aycliffe failed to deal with a right-wing centre, allowing Fenwick too much time and space to turn in the area and fire home at the front post.
Two minutes later and ‘keeper Scott Pocklington had to react smartly to tip Donoghue’s 25-yard free-kick over the crossbar.
Elliot Gardner forced Neil Postlethwaite into a fine save at his near post early in the second half but the game ended as a contest shortly afterwards when Dan Riley sent Palmer free in the area to double Team Northumbria’s lead.
Pocklington again saved sharply minutes later, this time from Scott, but the ‘keeper was penalised with 24 minutes remaining when he felled the same man in the area, giving Donoghue the chance to add a third from the spot.
Donoghue’s long ball forward on 72 minutes created confusion in the Aycliffe half allowing Scott to capitalise and slot home into the empty net.
The returning Sean Tarling struck an upright late on as Aycliffe sought out a consolation but it was a day to forget for the Champions who lost for only the third time this term.
Star Man – John CLOSE
The one bright point on another wise dull day in the Champions historic season.
