Match report

By Paul McGeary
It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show as Newton Aycliffe’s lowest crowd of the campaign witnessed a typical end-of-season encounter which only sprung into life during the last half hour.
Second half goals from Paul Broom, Ben Wood, Elliot Gardner and a Warren Byrne penalty gave the scoreline a flattering look after Dean Fox had cancelled out Anth Campbell’s superb opener in the first half.
Boss Allan Oliver restored Wood to his starting line-up after an injury to Stuart Owen while Broom started in central midfield after the late withdrawal of Josh Knox who had a knee complaint. Dan Mellanby again captained the side as Sean Tarling sat out the second game of his recent ban.
The Champions started emphatically and took the lead after just four minutes. Campbell, who had two minutes earlier stung the palms of ‘keeper Paddy Pisani with a 30-yard drive, rode two challenges on the edge of the area before rifling high past the Thornaby stopper with his unfavoured right foot.
Wood struck the crossbar shortly afterwards and that was the best the hosts had to offer as their visitors took up the task and chased the equaliser.
They were given the opportunity to do so just before the half hour mark when young James Oliver was adjudged to have pulled down Fox in the area. Full-back Adam Livingstone stepped up but placed his kick a yard wide of Scott Pocklington’s left-hand upright.
John Close was called upon to head Chris Wrathmall’s effort off the line soon afterwards but the Teesside outfit did draw level with seven minutes remaining in the first half when Jamie Blyth sent Fox clear to fire home at the near post.
Aycliffe upped the ante in the second period and started to show the sun-kissed crowd exactly why they were crowned champions of the second tier with a fine showing of attacking menace.
Mellanby sent Gardner clear in the 58th minute only for Pisani to haul the 21-year-old down and from the resultant penalty kick, Byrne smashed his 45th of the season straight down the centre of the goal.
Broom was next to beat Pisani with his 65th minute effort finding the net via the post from 20-yards and two minutes later Wood fired through a crowd of players after some fine work by substitute Fred Woodhouse for the fourth.
Byrne shot narrowly wide after fashioning a chance in the area with 72 minutes played but Oliver’s side did cap their day with a fifth just before full time.
Gardner played a fine one-two with Woodhouse before sweeping home from 10-yards to grab his 21st goal of the season.
Star Man – Elliot GARDNER
It was always going to take a fine performance to better the display put on by Mellanby and Gardner produced just that, glossed by a fantastic goal as the game closed out.
