Match report

By Paul McGeary
Newton Aycliffe maintained their impressive run of October form with their third win in succession, seeing off the only remaining unbeaten team in both divisions, Whitehaven, along the way.
Allan Oliver included Mark Tinkler in his line-up, with the former Football League veteran finally inking his transfer form just 24-hours previous.
Tinkler's inclusion allowed last year’s top scorer Elliot Gardner the opportunity to go back up front for the missing Craig Mickle, after his superb outing in his unfamiliar midfield role at Marske four days previous.
Whitehaven started the better, with Kevin Connolly warming up Scott Pocklington's hands after just four minutes with a rasping drive from fully 25-yards. Six minutes later and the big 'keeper kept the scores level with a fantastic save low to his left, beating away Craig Robson's low left-footed drive.
Aycliffe were shocked into gear, and a great move almost brought the game’s opening goal. A well-worked Anth Campbell free-kick saw the left-back find Warren Byrne inside the area. The 10-goal striker sent a square ball first time to Tinkler on the edge of the area, but opposition 'keeper Jack Fryer got his fingertips to the former Hartlepool man's right-footed slice.
With 25 minutes on the clock, Aycliffe marched ahead. Fred Woodhouse went down the left and found Gardner with an inside pass, midway into Whitehaven's half. Gardner took two touches infield, before sending a crashing shot inside Fryer's right-hand post from fully 25-yards.
Joy turned to despair for Gardner in an instant, as he saw red for violent conduct less than 60-seconds later. Having been fouled by Malcolm Holliday on half way - for which the Whitehaven skipper received a booking - Gardner angrily reacted and was deemed to have aggressively used his head in confronting his opponent, leaving the referee with no option but to dismiss him.
Aycliffe didn't rest on their lead, and Oliver pushed Woodhouse further forward to support Byrne, opting for a narrower midfield three. The attacking philosophy paid its dividend when the home side doubled their lead after 36 minutes. Byrne picked the ball up 25-yards out and in setting himself up onto his favoured left peg, sent a curling drive past Fryer, in off the left-hand upright for his 11th goal of the campaign.
Woodhouse put the game beyond doubt when he added a third seven minutes after the restart. Paul Broom went down the right channel and whipped the ball to Sean Tarling - outstanding once more - on the edge of the box. The Aycliffe skipper nudged the ball to Woodhouse 15-yards out and the former Stockton Town winger did the rest. Exquisitely turning his marker, the 19-year-old steadied himself before thumping his effort goalbound. Despite a minor deflection off Wayne Collins, the ball found the back of the net for Woodhouse's second goal of the term, following his opening day strike at North Shields.
Nine minutes later and the forward almost got another, having been found unmarked by Tarling once more. This time Fryer was equal to the strike, and got enough on the ball to divert it over the bar.
Pocklington preserved his clean sheet at the other end with a superb save from Leigh Dunn, as the 10-goal striker's looped effort headed towards the top left-hand corner of the former Darlington trainee's net. Pocklington's strong left handed diving save ensuring his side kept a sixth clean-sheet of the season.
October has now bore three wins from three league outings, eight goals from five different outlets, two clean sheets and nine points as Aycliffe continue to pursue Guisborough Town at the summit of the table. The Priorymen were 4-3 victors at home to Gillford Park today, but with third placed Crook slipping up at home, there is now a bit of breathing space for the front-running duo.
Star Man - Mark TINKLER
Pocklington was an impressive figure in goal, while Brian Fairhurst had his best game for his new side. Chrissy Beckett didn't put a foot wrong, nor did skipper Tarling, but for his steadiness, astute passing, calm head and solid defensive work, Tinkler takes the award, on his debut no less too.
