Match report

By Paul McGeary
History cruelly repeated itself just one week after Aycliffe's suicidal late display at home to Guisborough, as they threw away another two-goal advantage to the same opponents who claimed an unlikely draw late on to remain top of the skilltrainingltd Northern League second division.
The Newtonians had a point to prove after last weeks horror display and after 11 minutes Fred Woodhouse - playing in an unfamiliar left-wing-back role - almost struck them ahead when sent through by Warren Byrne. The Stockton-lad's shot though was saved by the legs of 'keeper Jonathan McDonald.
McDonald didn't hang on to his clean sheet for too much longer as Aycliffe marched ahead just a minute later. Dion Raitt, making his first start of the season, elegantly chipped a through ball to Byrne who lofted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper. With the ball landing short of the goal, Elliot Gardner had anticipated well and he beat Gary Wood to stroke into the gaping net.
Byrne should have doubled the lead just 60-seconds later but he scooped over the bar when sent through following some intricate play by Sean Tarling and Paul Broom.
It was Broom however who did double the advantage when he smashed an unstoppable right-foot effort low into McDonald's bottom right-hand corner on the quarter-hour mark, Byrne again the provider.
Guisborough were shell-shocked and despite some good midfield play from Tom Portas and Luke Bythway, the best showing they had in the opening 45 minutes fell to skipper David Onions but he could only find orbit when well placed in the six-yard box following Bythway's left-wing corner.
Just after half-time Byrne had the chance to put the game beyond doubt, but his left-foot drive was again saved by the legs of McDonald with the Priorymen desperately clearing their lines.
The game turned with a disputed red-card and Aycliffe boss Allan Oliver can be forgiven for having a case of de-ja-vu. Tarling, booked in the first half for an off the ball incident that warranted a telling off at best, was shown his second yellow card of the day for clumsily tripping Bythway when outstripped for pace. With Raitt already off injured, the visitors midfield was made up with Josh Knox, Gardner and Dan Mellanby for the final 25 minutes.
Guisborough sensed blood and with Wood and Mark Nicholson being allowed to carry the ball into crossing positions, it was only a matter of time before they breached Scott Pocklington's guard. From another Bythway corner, Aycliffe failed to clear and the ball fell to Onions who hooked home at the back post.
The same man nearly got the equaliser when he left Dan Mitton for dead in the 86th minute, but when faced with Pocklington in a one-on-one situation, the 'Dangerous One' fluffed his lines, akin to last week at Moore Lane Park, and the ball ran free.
However, the Priorymen did have the last laugh when in the third of seven stoppage time minutes, Portas' right wing centre was missed by Pocklington coming through the crowd to claim, and substitute Karl Henry had the freedom of the King George playing field to head home.
Star Man
Elliot Gardner - marginally takes the acclaim from Mitton and Broom, but last season's top scorer shaded it with a tireless display in which he must have covered every blade of grass - twice. Notched his second of the season in the process too and will be a miss for the next fortnight as holiday commitments take over.
