Match report

By Paul McGeary
There was no thunderous display from Newton Aycliffe on a stormy wet night at Moore Lane Park which saw just 45 spectators brave the elements for the visit of Teesside based Stockton Town - the former employers of Fred Woodhouse, who missed the game through holiday commitments.
Dan Mellanby and Mark Wood were notable absentees for the home side, who welcomed back Dion Raitt and Dan Lennon following Saturday's shambolic display against West Auckland Town. Warren Byrne again missed out but Dan Robinson featured late on from the bench for his first summer outing.
In the first half, Aycliffe passed the ball neatly and kept good possession, but failed to show much in front of goal, whilst at the back John Close and Paul Stout were rarely threatened and marshalled the back-line with comfort and ease.
In the second half, the introduction of Elliot Gardner and Josh Knox gave Allan Oliver's side a fresh impotus, but the best they had to offer was a rapturous shot from Knox, whose angled half volley missed corner of post and crossbar at the town end, following good build-up play.
Stockton took the lead on 79 minutes when a long punt upfield drew Stevie Richardson from his goal. The Aycliffe custodian was beaten to the ball 25-yards out, and Tony Johnson tapped home from two yards when found square by his strike partner.
Just six minutes later Aycliffe restored parity when the impressive Sean Tarling sent Knox through on goal. The 18-year old took two touches to set himself before smashing an angled drive inside the far post from the corner of the area, for his second pre-season strike.
Aycliffe can draw positives from the performances of Close, Raitt and Tarling in particular, whilst Lennon got another 90 minutes under his belt in his search for full fitness.
But the truth cannot be escaped and this was the home side's third game without victory as they move on to Dean Street - home of form side Shildon.
