Match report

By Paul McGeary
161 fans graced Moore Lane Park for the first ever visit of prestigious Northern League name Bishop Auckland, who ran out 3-2 winners on a humid afternoon in Newton Aycliffe.
Mark Wood and Paul Stout got their first outings in pre-season as boss Allan Oliver shuffled the pack as he continues to gauge his players before their assault on the second tier of the Northern League, which begins in four weeks time.
One of the players he continues to cast his eye upon is triallist Daniel Hawkins, an 18-year old striker who has recently been released from Middlesbrough.
Oliver will have been impressed with his number nine after just six minutes when some inventive thinking between himself and Dion Raitt led to the opening goal. Raitt took a quick free-kick after Hawkins had retrieved a dead ball and upon receiving the former Newcastle Blue Star man's slide rule pass, the ex-Boro junior turned his marker inside out, before curling an unstoppable shot into Peter Jeffries' bottom right hand corner.
Aycliffe seemed to regress from this however and despite his best efforts, goalkeeper Stevie Richardson was powerless to stop last seasons leading marksman, Adam Emson's header after 27 minutes. The former Consett man rising highest in the box to place beyond Aycliffe's custodian, who managed a flailing hand on the ball to no avail.
Just two minutes later and Jake Richardson's free kick was sliced into his own net by John Close as the balance of the game, and the scoreline took a drastic turn away from the home team, who opted for a more direct route to goal, rather than the intricate passing witnessed in the early stages of the game, and indeed on Wednesday past at Darlington Cleveland Bridge.
A flurry of changes in the second half breathed fresh impotus into Aycliffe and two of the subs, Wayne Hall and Dan Mellanby - formerly of the Two Blues - linked well down the left before the latter crossed superbly onto Elliot Gardner's chest six yards out. Gardner complied by slotting the delivery under Jeffries for the equaliser, and his fourth goal in as many days.
With the game petering out for a draw, Bishops launched a long free kick deep into Aycliffe territory at the Town End and their club captain, Steven Salvin was on hand to place his diving header beyond Richardson at the back post for the winner, with just six minutes on the watch.
