Match report

By Glen Robertson
Newton Aycliffe got back to winning ways against Wearside League side Wolviston, re-finding their scoring boots along the way, but another two goals conceded will be a concern.
A debut goal for Warren Byrne, plus strikes from Stuart Owen, Shaun Davies, Paul Broom and Nick Petch gave Aycliffe a comfortable-looking success.
Until the last half-hour it was anything but, though, as Wolviston troubled right from the start, taking the lead in the fourth minute. Scott Pocklington, making his first appearance in pre-season, was beaten from six-yards out after calls for a foul from the Aycliffe defence were ignored.
Aycliffe hit back immediately through Owen, who headed home after a quick free-kick from Paul Stout cleared the visitors’ defence.
It was soon 2-1 as newcomer Shaun Davies popped up at the far post unmarked to tap home. Joy turned to despair moments later when captain Stout limped off with an injury. Everyone will be hoping he recovers in time for Wednesday night’s game.
Wolviston made a couple of changes in attack as early as the 30th minute and the tactic prevailed right on half-time. A cross from the left was not dealt with and the Wolviston player got between Pocklington and the ball to head home.
A host of changes at the break from both sides saw a scrappy start to the second-half. It was not until the introduction of Danny Mellanby and Byrne into the attack that Aycliffe grabbed the initiative. Byrne looked dangerous and linked up well with Mellanby and instantly went close.
Aycliffe were now on top, and re-took the lead when Anthony Campbell’s through-ball was tucked away by Paul Broom. It was soon four as Byrne got his debut goal, and youngster Nick Petch rounded things off after Dion Raitt’s free-kick was saved.
The last 30 minutes had plenty of positives but Aycliffe will be looking to tighten up the defence for the visit of Darlington.
