Match report

By Paul McGeary
Newton Aycliffe's maiden venture into FA Vase football as a Northern League outfit did not end happily as they were humbled 5-1 away to West Allotment Celtic, of the first division.
Ironically, Allan Oliver's men had played Allotment at the same stage of the competition as a Wearside League team some 21-years ago, with Oliver a goalscoring man-of-the-match in a 5-2 Aycliffe victory.
History looked on course for repeating itself, as the Newtonians took an early lead at Whitley Park on a hot, yet blustery day. Mark Peck, pushed out to left back to accomodate skipper Paul Stout's return to the first team, swung a left wing cross in to the back post where Chase McMullen rose to nod his second goal of the season back across goal and in off Daniel Staples' right-hand upright.
Just two minutes later and Scott Pocklington had to be on guard at the other end, and the former Darlington 'keeper was equal to Stuart Nicholson's effort, saving it with his legs with the ball running out for a corner.
After 22 minutes Aycliffe nearly doubled their advantage. Peck, growing in confidence, hit a left-footed drive from fully 35-yards, which hit the inside of Staples' left-hand post this time before running across the line and free from danger.
Pocklington saved smartly again on 32 minutes, this time from Marc Walton who had outpaced John Close and broken into a one-on-one situation with Aycliffe's giant stopper.
Just a minute later though and parity was restored. Walton again the danger, lifting the ball over Paul Stout much like Paul Gascoigne's famous Wembley goal in 1996, before slotting the ball into Pocklington's bottom corner for his first goal of the season.
Four minutes later and Allotment - and Walton - got their second of the afternoon. With the Newtonian defence failing to clear a left-wing centre, youngster Mark Waite headed back into the danger area from 15-yards for Walton to acrobatically net from the six-yard line.
Worse was to come for a dishevelled Aycliffe, as Close inadvertently played Walton in with three minutes to go to half-time. Walton's attempted chip was saved by Pocklington but despite the best efforts of both he and Peck on the line, Daniel Hindmarsh was on hand to head Allotment further clear.
Aycliffe had the first show in the second period, and top scorer Warren Byrne almost reduced the arrears. Latching on to Peck's long throw-in, the former Shildon man could only watch as his lofted effort dipped fractionally over the bar.
That was to be Aycliffe's last meaningful chance as Celtic stretched their lead and put the game beyond their visitors, supported magnificently once more by a strong army of followers. Another ranging ball over the top of the Aycliffe back four, fell to Nicholson and with substitute Michael Heckley unable to catch the speed-merchant, Celtic's number 10 had the easy task of slotting home unchallenged.
The fifth goal arrived with 22 minutes remaining, substitute Dean Walker out-stripping Heckley down the left wing before running untroubled into the area and picking his spot across Pocklington's goal, as Aycliffe succumbed to their heaviest defeat since their introduction to the Northern League sphere.
McMullen, a clear man of the match for Oliver's men crashed an effort off the bar late on, but the nail was already in the Aycliffe coffin by this point and the visitors were thinking of their trip to high-profile Bedlington Terriers in the next round.
Aycliffe's reward was a league game with Gillford Park, which has now been brought forward from the second half of the season and will be played on September 18th, at Gilly's Cumbrian home, the Gillford Park Stadium.
Star Man
Chase McMullen
Despite another impressive showing by recent signing Peck, and the usual consistent effort from midfielder Sean Tarling, McMullen takes the acclaim for a tireless display of running and link-play, and of course, a superb headed effort from the smallest man on the park.
