Aycliffe bite back against Terriers
Allan Oliver’s Newton Aycliffe side restored faith in their followers after their crushing capitulation in the FA Cup to Billingham Synthonia at the weekend.
Bedlington Terriers were for large parts the better side at Moore Lane Park, but Paul Broom’s second half goal ensured maximum points for the hosts and preserved their unbeaten start to life in the top flight.
Ian Graham’s late header will be a contender for miss of the season as the striker unbelievably headed over the top of Andrew Spence’s goal, despite being just two yards out and unmarked.
Oliver brought Anth Campbell back into his starting line-up in place of Stuart Owen while Dan Mellanby started for the absent Glen Robson. Darren Craddock reverted to his more favoured central defence role, switching places at full-back with James Oliver.
Graham had the ball in the net after 10 minutes when he was played through by former Spennymoor forward Steven Richardson, but the linesman called the former slightly offside, dampening his enthusiasm after a neat finish under Spence.
Elliot Gardner had opposition ‘keeper Kevin Morton at full stretch in the 17th minute while Spence twice saved smartly as half time drew close, denying both Graham and Richardson.
The second half was a more low key affair, and only burst into life as Mellanby stung Morton’s hands on 61 minutes, the stopper doing well to force the ball wide for a home corner.
Three minutes later and Broom’s first of the season grabbed the points, as the winger turned superbly in the area before smashing low, on the turn, with his wrong foot into Morton’s bottom left-hand corner.
Aycliffe were left to defend a Terriers onslaught as the minutes drew in, and with Graham’s horrific miss in the last minute came the curtain down on a fine riposte from the Newtonians.

Darren Craddock – composed!
