Match report

By Glen Robertson
Newton Aycliffe made it 10-games unbeaten in the Northern League with a 2-0 victory over Marske United at Moore Lane Park.
Two-goals in a blistering opening eight-minute spell secured the victory. First Ben Wood fired home from the penalty-spot after Stephen Gibson was fouled, before Jardine thundered a stunning left-footed shot into the Seasiders’ net.
Wood started behind a front-two of Dan Mellanby and Jardine, with Nathan Wilson dropping to the bench. James Oliver and Josh Gray came in for Paul Broom and Stuart Owen, while Warren Byrne made the matchday 16 for the first time since he broke his foot in November.
Aycliffe were looking to avenge heavy defeats to Marske in the last two meetings between the sides – a 4-0 defeat in the cup last season and a 3-1 loss earlier in October and were ahead within six-minutes of the start.
Gibson cut inside from his right wingback position, before being hauled down in the box. Referee Marc Edwards had little hesitation in pointing to the spot, and Wood sent Willey the wrong way from 12-yards.
It was the perfect start for the hosts, and redemption for the 20-year-old goalscorer who had been sent-off against Consett last week.
Two-minutes later and Aycliffe were two-up. Mellanby expertly released strike-partner Jardine through on goal, and the former West Auckland forward superbly lobbed Willey from outside the area with his left-foot.
Aycliffe could have made it three after 10-minutes. Scott Pocklington’s goal-kick cleared the visitors’ defence, but Mellanby was unable to hook his effort on target from inside the penalty box.
Jardine should have doubled his tally on 26-minutes, when he was again released by Mellanby, but the forward shot straight at Willey when one-on-one with the ‘keeper.
Marske looked for a way back into the game in the second-half, perhaps remembering that Aycliffe had thrown away a two-goal lead last weekend. Leon Carling met Karl Charlton’s right-wing corner but saw his effort cleared off the line by Wood on the hour-mark.
There were more yellow cards than clear goalscoring opportunities in the last hour and Aycliffe held on to move to within a point of fifth-placed Dunston, who come to Moore Lane Park on Saturday March 10.
Next up for Allan Oliver’s side is Sunderland RCA away next Saturday, the last side to defeat Aycliffe in the league back in December.
