Match report

By Glen Robertson
Newton Aycliffe made it nine goals in two pre-season games with a 4-1 victory over Durham Alliance League side Whitehill at Moore Lane Park.
Elliot Gardner added to his hat-trick on Wednesday night with another strike, while Glen Robson scored his third in as many games to give Aycliffe a two-goal lead at the interval.
Further goals from second-half substitutes Mark Wood and 18-year-old Martin Sowerby sealed the victory against Mark Peck’s old side.
Aycliffe took 15 minutes to create the first sight at goal, with Robson and Gardner combining to force a smart stop from the busy visiting ‘keeper.
Just two minutes later Aycliffe were in front, when Gardner reacted quickest to a loose ball in the 18-yard box to slot home the opener. The goal settled the side down and passes started to find their target on a more regular basis, after a somewhat scrappy opening.
Ten minutes later the lead was doubled. Gardner turned provider to release Robson through on goal and the summer signing made no mistake, clinically slotting home. The pair combined again before the break, but Robson’s speculative drive clipped the bar.
Half-time brought a raft of substitutions by both sides – as is usually the case with these games – and Aycliffe settled the quickest, with Dan Mellanby once again pulling the strings.
The former Darlington man forced two saves from Whitehill’s ‘keeper in the first eight minutes of the half, before having a hand in Aycliffe’s third soon after.
Former captain Mark Wood battled well to win possession in Whitehill’s left-back position, before exchanging passes with Mellanby and firing the ball across the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.
Just as it looked the home side would ease to victory, the visitors showed just why their trophy cabinet is rarely empty. The reigning Durham Alliance League Challenge Cup winners took advantage of a loose pass in Aycliffe’s midfield and striker Anthony Davidson made no mistake from ten yards out to make it 3-1.
With both sides tiring in the heat, the game appeared to be petering out, but late substitute Sowerby grabbed his chance to shine with a well-taken half-volley with five minutes left to round off a comfortable victory for Aycliffe.
Pocklington; Beckett, Peck, Craddock, McHew; McMullen, Tarling, Wilson, Woodhouse; Gardner, Robson. Subs used: M. Wood, Campbell, Broom, Mellanby, Sowerby, Robinson.
