Newton Aycliffe 2 Newcastle Benfield 2
Aycliffe returned to action in the Ebac Northern League Division One with a draw against Newcastle Benfield. Aycliffe were lacking match practice with their last two games being postponed due to the weather.
Benfield took advantage after just 13 mins when Aycliffe keeper James Winter was unable to hold onto a high ball under a challenge from Daniel Taylor. The ball fell at Taylor's feet & he slotted the ball home.
As the first half developed Aycliffe began to show more promise with new signing Dennis Knight shooting wide on 21 mins after good work by Aaron Brown on the right. Five minutes later Aycliffe scored a deserved equaliser when Knight took a free kick which was powerfully headed home by centre-back Dan Mitton.
Aycliffe continued to press forward and just after the half hour had a penalty appeal waved away by the referee. The pressure continued and on 42 mins a Knight free kick was deflected for a corner. Knight took the corner lofting the ball onto the head of the other central defender, Andrew Green, who headed past keeper Andrew Grainger from 6 yards.
The second half started positively for Aycliffe with two corners in the first two minutes. Shortly after right-back Brown's diving header hit the side netting. Benfield then came back into the game & had chances as they looked for the equaliser.
Aycliffe tried to press for a third with skipper Paul Garthwaite driving into the box on 58 mins and having a good shot saved by the Benfield keeper. Martin Young replaced Knight on 65 mins immediately making his presence felt with shots on target but saved.
However, in the last 10 mins Benfield piled on the pressure & Aycliffe's defending became more desperate. Inevitably, the goal came with a cross being smartly put away by Benfield substitute Lewis Scorgie.
Aycliffe will feel disappointed not to take three points from this entertaining game. However, the biggest disappointment is probably that only 67 people turned up to watch rather than go Christmas shopping.
